周集中,1959年8月出生于湖南新邵,生物學(xué)家,現(xiàn)任美國橡樹嶺國家實驗室環(huán)境基因組學(xué)研究中心主任,清華大學(xué)環(huán)境學(xué)院教授。
1981年12月畢業(yè)于湖南農(nóng)業(yè)大學(xué)植物保護專業(yè),后又獲得該校昆蟲專業(yè)碩士學(xué)位并留校任教。后在美國華盛頓州立大學(xué)獲得分子遺傳學(xué)和細胞生物學(xué)博士學(xué)位。2001年7月12日在白宮授予其美國總統(tǒng)青年科學(xué)家獎。

人物經(jīng)歷

1981年考取湖南農(nóng)業(yè)大學(xué)昆蟲專業(yè)碩士研究生,師從著名的昆蟲生態(tài)學(xué)家陳常銘教授,進行數(shù)學(xué)生態(tài)研究。
1985年獲碩士學(xué)位,留湖南農(nóng)業(yè)大學(xué)任教。
1986年考取中國科學(xué)院環(huán)境生態(tài)研究中心系統(tǒng)生態(tài)室博士生,師從于已故的國際上著名的生態(tài)學(xué)家馬世駿教授,從事農(nóng)業(yè)生態(tài)系統(tǒng)的研究。
1993年5月周集中在華盛頓州立大學(xué)(Washington State University)獲得分子遺傳學(xué)和細胞生物學(xué)博士學(xué)位。
1993年6月1997年6月在美國密歇根州立大學(xué)(Michigan State University)美國自然科學(xué)基金會資助的微生物生態(tài)中心,跟隨美國科學(xué)院院士、美國微生物學(xué)會主席,國際上享有崇高盛望的微生物生態(tài)學(xué)家詹姆斯.迪杰(James Tiedje)教授從事博士后工作,主要進行微生物分子生態(tài)研究。
1996年周集中博士獲得美國能源部杰出博士后資助來到橡樹嶺國家實驗室工作,不久即被聘為研究員。
1997年6月至今在美國橡樹嶺國家實驗室先后任研究員、高級研究員、杰出研究員和環(huán)境基因組學(xué)研究中心主任。微生物學(xué)權(quán)威刊物Applied and Environmental Microbiology 雜志主編之一,美國微生物科學(xué)院(American Academy of microbiology)院士。2004年1月任中南大學(xué)“升華名師”微生物學(xué)科責(zé)任教授。

研究方向

微生物功能基因組學(xué)、基因組學(xué)研究技術(shù)、微生物生態(tài)和極端環(huán)境條件下的微生物以及群落和生態(tài)系統(tǒng)基因組學(xué)等多個領(lǐng)域。
 

工作成果

從1997年,周博士在橡樹嶺國家實驗室獲得許多不同的獎勵,例如,
2000年度的環(huán)境科學(xué)部的杰出成就獎,1998和2001的橡樹嶺國家實驗室的研究成果獎。
承擔(dān)美國“Genomes to Life”等重大項目20余項及中國海外青年合作研究基金等多項課題。
先后獲得2001年度美國青年科學(xué)家總統(tǒng)獎以及美國能源部和橡樹嶺國家實驗室青年科學(xué)家獎等多項獎勵,
曾任第七屆、九屆和十一屆國際微生物基因組學(xué)大會主席。
主編了微生物功能基因組學(xué)領(lǐng)域的第一本專著《Microbial Functional Genomics》。[3] 
在Science, Nature Review Microbiology, Nature Climate Change, Nature Communications, PNAS, Ecology Letters, ISME Journal, mBio等重要雜志發(fā)表論文540余篇(Citations >20,000, H-index, 75 based on Web of Science; Citations >29,000, H-index, 91 based on Google Scholar)。
擔(dān)任ISME J, mBio, AEM等著名期刊主編,F(xiàn)1000推薦專家。
成立“周集中—石小婭”獎學(xué)金,由周集中及夫人石小婭捐贈,專用于獎勵清華大學(xué)從事生態(tài)學(xué)及環(huán)境科學(xué)與工程的優(yōu)秀學(xué)生,代表了周集中教授對莘莘學(xué)子的激勵。作為環(huán)境學(xué)院唯一個人出資成立的獎學(xué)金,周集中表示,“捐贈不是因為富有,只是盡自己的微薄之力對社會做些有意義的事。”[4]
